87 countries apply for the 2019 Oscar in the non-English language film section. This was announced by the Oscar Academy on Monday in Beverly Hills, California.
Last year, a record number of 92 countries had submitted contributions for the so-called Foreign Oscars. Among the nominees for the 91st Annual Academy Awards this coming February are for the first time contributions from the African countries of Malawi and Niger.
For Germany, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s “Werk ohne Autor” is about a moving artist fate in post-war Germany. Iran is represented with the social drama “No Date, No Signature” Austria with the documentary essay “Waldheims Walzer”.
Last year, the NSU drama “Out of Nowhere” by Fatih Akin became the German Academy Award winner, but did not make it to the last five nominees. The Oscar in the category best non-English language film last brought from Donnersmarck’s GDR drama “The Lives of Others” in 2007 to Germany.
The five nominated films for the Overseas Oscar will be announced by the Academy on January 22, 2019. The award ceremony will take place on February 24, 2019 in Hollywood.
