Art student Nia Imani Franklin has been named Miss America 2019. At the award ceremony on Sunday in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the 25-year-old received the crown from Cara Mund, Miss America 2018.
Although Nia Franklin comes from North Carolina, she joined the US state of New York, where she lives and became Miss New York in June. In her speech, she said, “As a New Yorker, I know what it means to work hard.” As an artist, she wants to help “get students access to quality education.”
The title Miss America went to Miss New York for the seventh time. Franklin received a scholarship of $ 50,000 as a prize. For the first time in the 98-year history of the competition, the category “Swimsuit” fell away. Instead, the 51 candidates had to answer questions from their rivals. The background for this is the current #MeToo debate.
